This reproducible R Markdown analysis was created with workflowr (version 1.7.1). The Checks tab describes the reproducibility checks that were applied when the results were created. The Past versions tab lists the development history.
Great! Since the R Markdown file has been committed to the Git repository, you know the exact version of the code that produced these results.
Great job! The global environment was empty. Objects defined in the global environment can affect the analysis in your R Markdown file in unknown ways. For reproduciblity it’s best to always run the code in an empty environment.
The command set.seed(20230302)
was run prior to running
the code in the R Markdown file. Setting a seed ensures that any results
that rely on randomness, e.g. subsampling or permutations, are
reproducible.
Great job! Recording the operating system, R version, and package versions is critical for reproducibility.
Nice! There were no cached chunks for this analysis, so you can be confident that you successfully produced the results during this run.
Great job! Using relative paths to the files within your workflowr project makes it easier to run your code on other machines.
Great! You are using Git for version control. Tracking code development and connecting the code version to the results is critical for reproducibility.
The results in this page were generated with repository version 6176bd3. See the Past versions tab to see a history of the changes made to the R Markdown and HTML files.
Note that you need to be careful to ensure that all relevant files for
the analysis have been committed to Git prior to generating the results
(you can use wflow_publish
or
wflow_git_commit
). workflowr only checks the R Markdown
file, but you know if there are other scripts or data files that it
depends on. Below is the status of the Git repository when the results
were generated:
Ignored files:
Ignored: .DS_Store
Ignored: .Rhistory
Ignored: .Rproj.user/
Ignored: data/.DS_Store
Ignored: output/.DS_Store
Note that any generated files, e.g. HTML, png, CSS, etc., are not included in this status report because it is ok for generated content to have uncommitted changes.
These are the previous versions of the repository in which changes were
made to the R Markdown (analysis/siblings_analysis.Rmd
) and
HTML (docs/siblings_analysis.html
) files. If you’ve
configured a remote Git repository (see ?wflow_git_remote
),
click on the hyperlinks in the table below to view the files as they
were in that past version.

Our sibling analysis provides an overview of family size, examining the number of children a mother has and its relationship with the number of sibling each individual has. This tells us the number of first degree relatives each individual has, helping to predict the probability that an individual will be detected in the forensic database.
Here are the frequency tables for each race to show the number of children born, the number of mother who has “chborn_num” children, the number of sibling, and the number of individuals who has “n_sib” siblings.
\[ n_{sib} = chborn_{num} - 1 \]
\[ \text{freq}_{n_{\text{sib}}} = \text{freq}_{\text{mother}} \cdot \text{chborn}_{\text{num}} \]
For example, suppose 10 mothers (generation 0) have 7 children, then there will be 70 children (generation 1) in total who each have 6 siblings.

The following summary statistics tables describe the racial breakdown of average number of siblings that individuals have across census year.
Table 3 | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|

RACE | YEAR | Mean | Variance | Std_Dev |
Black/African American | 1,960 | 3.02 | 9.69 | 3.11 |
Black/African American | 1,970 | 3.00 | 8.86 | 2.98 |
Black/African American | 1,980 | 3.21 | 8.66 | 2.94 |
Black/African American | 1,990 | 3.20 | 7.62 | 2.76 |
Table 4 | ||||

Summary Statistics of Number of Siblings of White Population | ||||
RACE | YEAR | Mean | Variance | Std_Dev |
White | 1,960 | 2.62 | 5.39 | 2.32 |
White | 1,970 | 2.45 | 4.51 | 2.12 |
White | 1,980 | 2.55 | 4.08 | 2.02 |
White | 1,990 | 2.53 | 3.59 | 1.89 |
Note: On average, individuals from White population have smaller number of siblings than Black/African American Population across all census year.
Note: The graph shows racial disparities in family size. Black/African American families consistently have a higher proportion of larger families compared to White families across all census years.Larger family sizes, may result in a higher number of first-degree relatives (siblings). This can increase the probability of detecting individuals in forensic databases.
Note: Both Black/African American and White populations has diminishing trend of having larger sibling groups over the decades. However, the graph indicates differences in sibling numbers between the two racial groups. Black/African American individuals are more likely to have larger numbers of siblings across all census years compared to White individuals.
Note: Focusing on mothers in the 50-60 age range, the graph shows that family size in both racial group has generally decreased over time, with fewer families having a large number of children in the more recent years (1980 and 1990). In addition, it also shows a racial disparity between racial groups. Black/African American families consistently have a higher proportion of larger families compared to White families across all years.

Note: Focusing on mothers in the 50-60 age range, the graph shows a significant change in the distribution of number of siblings across decades. Particularly by 1990, there is a noticeable shift toward smaller sibling groups in both racial groups. The graph also shows a clear racial disparity in number of siblings. In the earlier census year, a higher proportion of Black/African American individuals have a larger number of siblings. However, individuals in white population display a steeper decline in the number of siblings as we move towards more recent years.
